Together Treasure Valley sponsors kindergarten readiness resources developed by Lee Pesky Learning Center for 7,500 Treasure Valley families

Incoming kindergarten students will receive ABC story mats and activity guides to improve foundational literacy skills that promote kindergarten readiness.

Boise, Idaho (March 8, 2017) – Together Treasure Valley is sponsoring foundational literacy tools for 7,500 incoming kindergarten students across seven school districts in the Treasure Valley: Boise, West Ada, Caldwell, Nampa, Vallivue, Kuna, and Emmett. ABC mats and activity guides will be distributed to parents at kindergarten orientations between March 9th and May 14th, 2017.

On average, just one in two Idaho kindergarten students enters school with the fundamental skills needed to meet or exceed grade level benchmarks. Lee Pesky Learning Center created the ABC story mats and activity guides to improve literacy skills and kindergarten readiness.

The Center’s Director of Professional Development, Cristianne Lane, said, “These tools help children by focusing on the skills they will need to be successful learners when they enter school. When children enter kindergarten knowing their alphabet letters and other foundational literacy skills that our ABC mats help to develop, they are more confident and have greater success in learning to read.”

In addition to receiving a placemat-sized, laminated mat with two sides of learning activities, parents will receive an activity sheet, available in English and Spanish, to help them engage with their children to develop these skills and enjoy the learning process together.

“Lee Pesky Learning Center has a 20 year track record of working alongside students, families and teachers to improve outcomes for Idaho’s kids. We are honored to receive this award from Together Treasure Valley and to provide these effective learning tools to incoming kindergarten students and their families across the Treasure Valley,” said Dr. Evelyn Johnson, the Center’s Executive Director.
